It was a great experience working with the leading U.S. universities, the Center for Research Libraries, the South Asia Microform Project, the Committee on South Asian Libraries and Documentation, the Association for Asian Studies, the Library of Congress, the Asia Society, the British Library, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, MOZHI in India, the Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in India, Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya in Nepal, and other institutions in South Asia to make the Digital South Asia Program a success.

The Indian collaborators who were of help are Roja Muthia Research Library (Madras), Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Hyderabad, Urdu Research Center (Hyderabad), Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta and the U.S. institutions include CRL, Columbia, Harvard, Triangle South Asia Consortium, Chicago, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

Digitization and Data Conversion Of Indian Languages

India is a multilingual country with as many as 22 scheduled languages and computer technology breaks the language barrier and bridges the gap between the various sections of the society through easier access to information using their respective languages and hence language computing becomes central to the exchange of information across speakers of various languages.

Technology Development for Indian Languages (TDIL) Programme initiated by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Govt. India has the objective to develop information processing tools to facilitate human machine interaction in Indian languages and to develop technologies to access multilingual knowledge resources. Department of Information Technology launched another major initiative called National Roll-out Plan to aggregate these software tools and to make these available through a web-based Indian Language Data Centre (ILDC). This activity is being executed in close coordination with CDAC,GIST,Pune. Under this user-friendly software tools and fonts are being made available free for public through language CDs and web downloads for the benefit of masses. Swift Information Technologies has extensive experience in data conversion, especially re-keying and mark-up to SGML/XML/HTML. We have successfully completed conversion projects involving various kinds of information (e.g. Legal, Academic, Scientific, Technical, Financial, etc.), the data was provided to us in many formats (e.g. Hard copies, Electronic files – proprietary or popular word processor and typesetting software’s, Scanned documents, microfiche, etc.) which were converted to SGML/XML/HTML or to some proprietary format.

Swift Information Technologies uses 500 efficient operators for data capture and data processing projects. The data is re-keyed into a proprietary format using an in-house package Swift -KEY. Data from a hard copy is re-keyed twice by two different operators. The output is compared by two different operators using another in-house package

Swift-CMP, who refer to the hard copy and correct the differences. The output from the two compare operators is then compared by a third operator for any inconsistencies which are rare at this point. The data then goes through more quality checks such as proof-reading, parsing, etc. After this, random samples of the data are selected from each batch and thoroughly checked, if an error is detected at this level the whole batch goes through the above mentioned processes.
